Story By Bjorn Jansen
April has been another strong month for the SpeedPro training group, with athletes continuing to make impressive progress as they move into the final taper ahead of the Surrey County Track and Field Championships on 10th and 11th May. The weeks following the Easter break have seen a flurry of personal bests, competitive performances and clear signs of form-building across sprint and middle-distance events.
Lee Valley Performances: SpeedPro Athletes Shine Post-Easter
Leah Olmia returned from the break in excellent shape, setting a two-second personal best in the 200m with a time of 27.40 at Lee Valley. Her performance reflected the consistency she’s been showing in training and suggests she’s well-placed to make further improvements heading into the summer season.
Also in action at Lee Valley was Amelia Barnes, who continued her progress with solid performances in the 100m (13.45) and 200m (27.97). Now, she prepares to step up to the 300m for the first time at the Surrey Championships—a move the coaching team believes plays to her strengths. With her recent form and competitive mindset, there’s excitement around what she could achieve in the longer sprint.
Open Meets: Building Momentum Over 300m and 800m
Middle-distance athlete Holly Townsend also added to the month’s success, setting another personal best in the 800m with a strong run of 2:27.71 at the open meet in Wimbledon. Her pacing and race execution continue to improve, putting her in a strong position ahead of county competition.
Freya McAndie demonstrated her return to race rhythm with a promising run over 300m at Tonbridge, clocking 44.49. Freya is sharpening up with each outing, and her progress is well-timed with the Surrey Championships on the horizon.
Meanwhile, Lia Clements debuted over the 100m and 200m at the Lily B League meeting hosted by Wimbledon. Setting personal bests in both events, Lia showed great potential and competitive composure. As she gains more racing experience, there’s a real sense that this summer could be a breakthrough season for her.
Lucy Whorton also impressed at the Lily B, running her first 200m of the season. She produced a 1.5-second personal best of 28.1, a significant improvement and a sign that she is building momentum at the right time. The coaching staff is confident that more will come as the season progresses.
In the longer sprint, Tommy Corsara delivered another standout performance over 300m, running a personal best of 37.18. Tommy’s consistency and race execution indicate he is hitting form precisely when it counts, with the county championships fast approaching.
